Flashing white or red LEDs

Your Dyson hair dryer includes a filter which needs regular maintenance. Your machine will detect if the filter is overdue for a clean, and will shut itself off for protection.

When this occurs, it will also display red or white flashing LED indicator lights to show maintenance is needed.

This is easily resolved without the need for further support by giving both the inner and outer filter mesh a thorough clean. Wiping with a soft cloth may not be enough - please follow the steps below to fully troubleshoot and resolve the issue.

Using your Dyson hair dryer on the wrong voltage, or via a power supply which isn’t appropriate, may also cause your machine to shut off and display flashing indicator lights.

Am I using my Dyson hair dryer on the correct voltage?

The Dyson Supersonic™, Dyson Supersonic Nural™ and Dyson Supersonic r™ hair dryers have been precisely engineered for use with the standard voltage of the country they were purchased in.

Using these machines in a country where the voltage range differs to the country of purchase could result in permanent damage being caused. A machine manufactured for use in one country may become inoperable in another. Please follow the guidance on usage in the guarantee section of your User guide.

Is my Dyson hair dryer connected to an appropriate power supply?

Try testing your Dyson hair dryer using a different plug socket to rule out any issues with the socket and power supply.

Please note:

  • We don’t recommend using your Dyson hair dryer via an extension cable.
  • Your home's power system safely supplies a fixed amount of current, with each component specified and certified to meet the needs of the system. Running multiple appliances using an extension cord could accidentally cause an overload - risking a fire or damage to insulation, and the potential for an electric shock. This is why we advise against using your Dyson machine with an extension cord.
  • Additionally, as we don't manufacture extension cords ourselves, we're not in a position to vouch for their safety or quality. For this reason, any damage caused to your Dyson machine as a result of using it with an extension cord may not be covered under your Dyson guarantee.

Does my ALCI plug need to be reset?

ALCI plug

In some countries, Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryers include an ALCI plug. If yours does, it’s possible this may have tripped in use. To test and reset it -

  • Plug the machine into a plug socket and press the yellow test button.
  • The red reset button will now click out of place.
  • To reset the ALCI, unplug the machine and press the reset button.
  • Plug the machine back in and retest.

How do I clean my Dyson hair dryer’s filter?

Important: Please unplug your machine from the mains electricity supply and allow it to cool down completely for a minimum of 1 hour before cleaning your filter.

  • To remove the filter cage, hold the handle firmly and gently rotate the filter cage anti-clockwise.
  • Pull the filter cage down and away from the machine.
  • Clean the filter mesh with a soft, dry toothbrush or a C-brush. Don't use chemicals or water.
  • Clip the filter cage back onto the machine. Lock in place by ensuring the dot is below the closed circle.

  • Remove the filter cage by sliding down the power cord and opening at the split line.
  • Wipe away any loose, large debris such as hair strands or large dust particles from the filter cage.
  • Rinse the two filter parts under a warm running tap.
  • Using a pea-sized amount of clarifying shampoo, lightly scrub the exterior of the inner filter cage in small, circular motions. Then, lightly scrub the interior of the inner filter cage with up and down motions before rinsing.
  • Hold up to the light to ensure there is no remaining debris or dirt.
  • Using a pinching motion, gently squeeze dry the inner filter cage with a dry paper towel.
  • Allow both filters to fully dry before proceeding.
  • Slide the inner filter back into the cage, then open at the split line and replace back on to the machine to click into place.

In commercial use in a high-traffic salon environment, your Dyson hair dryer will be continually exposed to dust, hair fibres and airborne styling spray particles. For this reason, we recommend maintaining your machine’s filter at least once a week following the steps below:

  • Remove the filter cage by sliding down the power cord and opening at the split line.
  • Use a soft toothbrush or C-brush to gently clean the filter mesh. Don't use chemicals or water.
  • Gently pull the filter parts in opposite directions.
  • To clean the filter cage, wipe away debris and gently tap to remove lodged dirt.
  • Rinse both filter parts under warm running water.
  • Apply a pea-sized amount of clarifying shampoo to your finger and lightly scrub the filter fabric. Rinse for 20 seconds, until all shampoo is removed.
  • Gently pinch the filter fabric dry using a paper towel.
  • Allow to air-dry thoroughly before re-joining the filter parts and clipping them back on the machine.

I’ve followed all of these steps, but I still need support.

If you’ve ensured your Dyson hair dryer is being used on the correct voltage and via an appropriate power supply, and you’ve thoroughly cleaned the filter, but are still finding your machine shuts off and displays flashing LED lights, our Customer Care experts will need to provide additional support.

When you have your machine easily to hand, they’ll be able to walk you through some further diagnostic checks to make sure everything is working correctly.

If a repair or a replacement is needed they’ll be able to arrange this for you, and to confirm whether this is covered under your Dyson guarantee.
