Whilst the Dyson Robot vacuums navigate the home by employing a unique vision system, they all ultimately navigate using a similar pattern.

The robot cleans in 5m x 5m grid and will finish cleaning each gridded section before moving on to an adjacent 5m x 5m grid.

Should it encounter an obstacle in this grid, which it is trying to navigate around or over, it may spin and rotate on the spot. This is until it can free itself from the said obstacle. Once freed, it will continue it’s clean.

If it is spinning, making small rotations or rapidly reversing with the brush bar off whilst in a clear open space, it could be lost and attempting to identify its location on the map. If this is the case, it is important to ensure that there is even lighting transition across the property, the machines sensors are cleaned and that no defining features in the home have moved.

Our ‘Preparing your home’, ‘Cleaning your machine and the sensor’ and ‘Mapping your home’ articles can walk you through these checks.

Should the machine be unable to free itself or find its location on the map, by picking it up and placing it back on the ground in a location a few centimetres away from its original one and pressing the play button, it will restart the clean.
