The first time I used the hair dryer it runs for about 5-10 seconds then just cuts out, and takes a while before it will start again then cuts out again, anyone else have this issue?

This is not normal behavior. More often than not, if a Dyson hairdryer shuts off, it’s due to an overheating issue. The most common cause of that a filter which is overdue for maintenance, or needs a more thorough clean. You can read more about machine maintenance and troubleshooting here:
But a brand-new dryer should not be shutting down like this. If you are holding the dryer with your hand covering the filter vent at the bottom, that could cause the dryer to overheat and shut off. Or, if using in an outlet not suited to the dryer’s voltage can also cause problems.
