Possible software issue, rather than hardware. Have you tried doing a hard reset/factory restore?

i havent had any recent issues in the last couple of days - but its as though the fan goes into a deep sleep. once its awake using the remote, it is then controlable with the app, which has more functionality, with direction and timers.
