BP03 - Chemical smell | Dyson Community

Hello, I have purchased a BP03 purifier 4 months ago and when using it I noticed an unusual smell coming out of the machine during operation. It’s somewhat plasticky / chemical but not something I have smelled in other home products. It’s definitely not pleasant and becomes present in the whole apartament if the machine runs for a longer time.

I initially thought it was the plastic casing that needed to air out, but as the smell didn’t go away after a while, I had the device sent to the local service center (Bucharest, Romania) to be checked. They kept it for a while and raised this issue with Dyson, the official reply was that this is within parameters. They also told me that they compared it to another similar machine they had and that had the same smell.

I’ve read online various reports of this occurring in similar machines or other purifiers that have the formaldehyde catalytic filter installed, so I am wondering if that is not the source. The smell is not coming from the particle/carbon filters, if I remove the top of the machine it’s obvious it’s from within the machine where the top vents are. I’ve also noticed recently on a rainy day when inside humidity was hovering 60% that the smell seemed even stronger, but that was on a single occasion. Indoor humidity is usually 40-50% max.

My main concern is that it might not be safe to use, especially since I also have a 4 year old. I have several other Dyson products that I am happy with, I didn’t expect to face this kind of issue with what is meant to be a top of the line air purifier, and especially not to be able to find a resolution for it.

I wanted to see if others have been facing the same issue recently and if there is any official Dyson point of view in this regard. Thanks.
