The first of three articles focused on cleaning the common areas of your house.

This edition covers, in detail ‘How to clean your staircase’.

With the right tools, accessories, and vacuum cleaner, it’s possible to keep your home looking spotless. To help you tick all the boxes during your next dedicated deep clean, here’s Dyson’s step-by-step guide to cleaning common, high-traffic areas of the household, such as the staircase, hallway and living room.

To cut down on cleaning time, here are our top three preparation tips:

  1. Gather your supplies and accessories before you begin.
  2. Work on one area of the house or room at a time.
  3. Clear any clutter from the floor or other surfaces.

What you’ll need to get started:

  • Cordless vacuum cleaner
  • Crevice tool
  • Mini-motorised tool
  • A damp, lukewarm cloth

Step-by-step guide:

  1. Begin at the top of the staircase with the Crevice tool, which can be attached to the vacuum in handheld mode for ease of use.
  2. Make your way around the edges of each step, especially the back where debris likes to gather. Any loosened debris that isn’t collected by the crevice tool will be removed at a later stage.
  3. When you reach the bottom, replace the Crevice tool with the Mini-motorised tool and continue in handheld mode.
  4. Return to the top of the staircase to clean the tread of the stairs, again making your way downwards. Cleaning from the top down means you'll pick up any fallen, airborne dust as you go.
  5. Finish up by running a damp, lukewarm cloth down the handrail or banister. Handrails can be a hotbed for germs, so you may want to repeat this step with some disinfectant.
