Corrale Hair straightener - Dead battery, unusable in 2 years, is this not subject to California's right to repair act? | Dyson Community

Hello,

Question for the community and for Dyson support as well (yes I tried chat before posting this). Is the Dyson Corrale exempt from the California Right to repair act? https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240SB244

Specifically, the following should apply to this appliance - “Existing law also requires every manufacturer making an express warranty with respect to an electronic or appliance product, as described above, with a wholesale price to the retailer of $100 or more, to make available to service and repair facilities sufficient service literature and functional parts to effect the repair of the product for at least 7 years after the date a product model or type was manufactured, regardless of whether the 7-year period exceeds the warranty period for the product.

The bill would require, except as specified and regardless of whether any express warranty is made, the manufacturer of an above-described electronic or appliance product, in the above-described circumstances, and in those same circumstances but sold to others outside of direct retail sales, to make available, on fair and reasonable terms, to product owners, service and repair facilities, and service dealers, the means, as described, to effect the diagnosis, maintenance, or repair of the product, as provided. The bill would also require a service and repair facility or service dealer that is not an authorized repair provider, as defined, of a manufacturer to provide a written notice of that fact to any customer seeking repair of an electronic or appliance product before the repair facility or service dealer repairs the product, and to disclose if it uses replacement parts that are used or from a supplier that is not the manufacturer. The bill would also authorize a city, a county, a city and county, or the state to bring an action in superior court to impose civil penalties on a person or entity for violating the Right to Repair Act, as provided. The bill would make these requirements and enforcement provisions operative on July 1, 2024.”

Has anyone seen an exception to this law for Dyson products in general or this particular product.

This law was passed to prevent landfill worthy appliances and devices to continue to be sold and prevented from being repaired so more or these could be sold.

Hi!

I reached out to your support through chat and the rep kept on insisting that I had to get the repair done through Dyson’s service center and they will not share the repair manual and a place to order the parts so I can get it repaired elsewhere/on my own. They cited “Dyson’s repair” policy as an excuse, ignoring the provisions of the law. The law is designed to protect consumers like me from such situations and not be a victim of non-repairable appliances, unfavorable service policies that can subject consumers to avoidable cost (as the repair can be done outside Dyson’s network per the law, including unauthorized service providers). They were perhaps trained to defend Dyson policies and unaware that law precedes all policies made by individual companies. I have the transcript saved from this chat for reference. To avoid going through the infinite loop of a support conversation again, is your contact email or physical address the best place to send my request for a repair manual and replacement parts (batteries). I want to make a reasonable effort to redeem my rights under the right to repair law before exploring other options like reaching out to the city / county and state authorities for enforcement. Please share the repair manual to start with if you are serious about and believe you are compliant as stated above.
