Hi @TGL86,

Welcome to the Dyson Community!

I can confirm that we do not have a compatible Low reach adaptor for the Dyson Gen5detect™ vacuum, available to purchase as a standalone accessory.

Apologies for any disappointment, but I’ll make sure this feedback is passed along to the right people for you.

I have the Gen5 detect and the low reach adaptor tool 971435-01 does NOT fit the vacuum. There is a plastic piece between the two prongs that won’t allow it to be pushed fully on

Does not work. Not sure why this is such a confusing topic for Dyson. Not even sure at this point a low reach exist for Gen5

I agree that, according to Dyson’s list, the low-reach adaptor tool does not have the Gen5detect listed as being compatible but……………..

Just before Christmas 2023, Dyson offered two deals on the Gen5detect, one being purple and one being the limited edition Prussian blue/copper.  They appear to be identical except for the colourway and the fact that the Prussian Blue edition included a low-reach adaptor tool.  What I would like to know is if that adaptor tool fitted the Prussian Blue vacuum and, if it did, why it’s not available for the other Gen5detect version.

I’ve now spoken to 3 different Dyson people and none of them have been able to answer the question. They just say it’s out of stock and to wait for an email.  I had an email yesterday and rang to check it’s the right part as when I looked it was the same stock number as one I have that doesn’t fit. The Dyson call-handler couldn’t help.

Also wondering about this business - I have the original low reach adaptor tool (for our V8) and as described it doesn’t fit as there is a plastic tongue which prevents it fitting to the vac.

I’m very tempted to get a dremel and try to mod the V8 low reach adaptor and get rid of that tongue of plastic...

Do we know if this product exist yet? Since 971435-01 does not fit. Seems dyson has abandoned the low reach adapter going by I haven’t received any email notifications of stock in the last 7 months.

Their website says it will work with the Gen5 but it doesn’t. The power prong adapter is different. What a sad company this has become. I’m trying to seriously get rid of my flawed products at this stage, service is awful and the employees lack empowerment to do anything.

It can work with modification. Pull the grey cover that has the tab to be removed on the red portion to reveal a torx screw. Remove that and the grey piece comes out so you can cut/dremel the tab, then reinstall. I’ve been using it for a couple weeks now without issue. There is nothing special inside the adapter, just two wires.

Thank you for this answer.  I was at my wits end after ordering the low reach adaptor,  only to have it not work.  Then having them send me another one and having the same issue.

How do you pull the grey cover? I tried multiple ways of pulling, but it is only shaking a bit. I am scared that I might damage it.

Thanks.

To add to the confusion, the web page for the 971435-01 adaptor currently does say that it’s compatible, and it’s on the accessories shop page for the gen5detect, which is how I ended up ordering one last week.  But it showed up today and it’s the same incompatible part being discussed here, with that pesky plastic tab blocking the connection.

I was able to do the surgery mentioned above by using a pair of picks to release the spring tabs on the gray connector, but even then it took a lot of wiggling and pulling to move it far enough to expose the screw.  A few snips with some sprue cutters easily got rid of the tab. I Just used it to get under the bed with a powered head, and no problem so far.

I did also try taking out the hub screws to see if that would make it possible to remove some of the other plastic covers, but it didn’t really help. I get the sense that the final assembly involves some hidden spring clips to snap it all together, with no expectation of ever being able to take it apart.

low reach head with tools

Getting the spring clips initially released did take a lot of tries with the picks. Since the tab is going to be removed anyway, it can probably be used with needle-nosed pliers to pull on the connector.

I managed to do it, yesterday after posted my question. Thank you, anyways. I found out that the easiest way to do it is to pull gently on the part and insert the picks in holes and using them as a lever to pull up. It came out relatively easy. After that I cut the grey obstacle and evened it out (it took some time), since I don’t have a dremel. However, with patience, I managed to get it working and now I have a functional low-reach adapter for the Gen5.

Was this ever resolved did dyson a company that charges a biliion dollars for it’s products actually take the time to properly create a low reach adapter for the gen5detect or is the mod only solution avaialble?

Nope, bought one recently still not compatible even though their site says compatible

had to the the trick mentioned in previous post to remove the connector housing & then added hot glue to stabilize it so it wasn’t loose.
