Alarming noise you say! I can only imagine it being an electric short. Parts are quite easy to replace. Start off with the battery/charger, then replace the handle component. All three should set you back anywhere between $60 - $150. It really depends if you decided to buy genuine parts (as Dyson say) or cheaper alternatives.
Replacing the whole thing might be a better option... I’d recommend the V11. Great piece of kit! Better all around, high runtime, stronger suction and easier to use !
