I have a very early Dyson stick vac. No model number on it but it does say MAX on the top. Maybe 15 years old. Lost manual years ago. How to replace the filter?

Heyyyyyyy. Oh what a pickle! The MAX doesn’t give a lot away, it’s on most the stick vacs!
According to Wikipedia, 2009 - 2012 was the DC35,DC44/DC45. Maybe one of these! Try visiting their website - Spare parts for Dyson cordless vacuum cleaners | Dyson. It has images of all their Dyson’s 😃!
