telescopic hose to long

Hi I have recently purchased a multi floor upright Dyson and am struggling with having to pull out the whole telescopic hose before handle will unlock. Can this be overcome in anyway at all as find hose is just to long for some quick jobs like sofa etc after grandchildren have been. Only other way I can find is to pull fully out take apart and use flexible hose part which is a bit long winded for a 20 second job.

Thanks for the reply. The multi floor animal is slightly different to your video. The handle will not release at all until the telescopic hose is fully extended vertically.  At that point the flexible hose  is able to be disconnected from it to change accessories. 
Seems a bit of a design issue as not very good for small jobs ?
