Can I run purifier TP09 without catalytic filter

My air purifier does its job well. But for the last half year, it started to blow air that smell unpleasant. I replaced a set of new filter but the smell persist.

I found out the smell comes from its catalytic filter. According Dyson website, catalytic filter doesn’t need to be changed. But the smell gives me headache. I am not sure I should wash it.

I wonder if I can run the machine without the catalytic filter.

Thank you

Hi @mingFL34677,

Welcome to the Dyson Community!

This sounds like an unusual issue, and isn't something we'll be able to troubleshoot via the Dyson Community forum.

To help pinpoint the cause we'll need our Customer Care experts to take you through some further troubleshooting checks when you have your Dyson HEPA Cool™ Formaldehyde purifier available with you. If a replacement or a repair is needed, they’ll be able to discuss your options with you.

In the meantime, please do not run your machine without the SCO filter in place, as it hasn’t been designed or tested for use in this way.

Please visit Dyson.com and click Support to get in touch with the right Dyson Customer Care team for your region.

We’ll look forward to speaking to you.

The smell usually occurs in very humid environments. Ususally the smell goes away by letting it run for a longer time.

I do not know why you should not run the purifier without the SCO filter. The formaldehyde wont be filtered out without the SCO filter. The TP09 is almost identical to the TP07 besides the formaldehyde parts (sensor and filter).

Thanks for the information. Florida humility is at 80% most of time, I keep the house cool so humility is around 45%. I have read few posts on Reddit, and there were some complained about the similar problem because the higher humility environment.

I ran the machine all day long in hoping the smell went away. But it didn’t. It is not a pleasant smell.

On the other side, I like the  formaldehyde filter feature. I keep looking for solutions including finding a SCO filter replacement.
