DC54 suction soon becomes muffled and ineffective

I have a DC54 and was using the Dual Mode Suction tool with it, but I found that -- after a few seconds of power on -- the suction sound suddenly changes and becomes “muffled”, and it won’t pick anything up. The suction is really weak.

If I remove the head entirely and just suck with the naked metal cylinder, it works okay.

But if I put on any head, including the Dual Mode one or the brush-bar, the suction goes weak as described. So it can’t just be blockage in one of the heads.

What does this mean and how can I fix it?

Hi @equinox,

Welcome to the Dyson Community!

From what you’ve described, it sounds very likely that your Dyson Cinetic™ vacuum is blocked. If airflow can’t pass through the machine as normal, a safety valve will open to help protect the motor - which is why you’ve noticed the change in sound and reduction pickup performance.

Our video guide will walk you checking the floor tool, wand, hose, lower duct hose and bin inlet for blockages. The lower duct hose (the flat flexible hose which runs underneath the clear bin) can sometimes become obstructed if an item too large for the machine is picked up - so this is worth checking thoroughly.

The machine shown is slightly different to yours, but the process will be the same:

Hope this helps! I'm confident this will resolve the issue but if you do need further help after giving this a try, please visit Dyson.com and click Support to get in touch with the right Dyson Customer Care team for your region.
